TV Coverage

Postby AML » Thu Jan 28, 2010 1:37 pm

We as organisers are aware that we never seem to see any TV coverage of single venue or pacenoted asphalt events in Scotland or the North of England for that matter but we have previously looked into such coverage but it proved to be too expensive.

We have recently been in talks once again but this time with another company who at present cover speed events, this coverage has meant an increase in sponsorship for competitors, events and the championship and it has worked by increasing entry fee's as well as payment from the events/championship......

After taking it all in, we have worked out that if we increased the entry fee's by £15 per event and with the additional costs paid for by the organising clubs, we could have a 30/60 minute programme to be screened on Motors TV after each event. Now we as organisers could not do this on our own as we do not have the budget but with your help we could all benefit, you and your sponsors would get some well deserved coverage, the events themselves may receive increased sponsorship and the that may work for the Championship also, meaning costs could be kept down.

We can only do this if we all work together and share the funding.

The good news is that on top of the coverage on TV, each crew would receive a DVD, basically a copy of the what would be shown on TV but including all the unused footage from each event, with additional professional copies at a reduced cost that could be given to sponsors.

The thing to bare in mind is that currently if you want a DVD from an event the cost varies from £10 to £30 quality dependant, this DVD would be professionally edited with voice over by a presenter.

Please vote accordingly and please feel free to tell us why you voted the way you have.

Seems decent value just for the DVD and if it gets us on telly too that's great!

Looks like a cracking idea, even though we are doing selected rounds and no championship this year it would be helpful for sponsorship with tv coverage.

I think this sounds a great idea especially on non spectator events!!
However as this discussion has taken place on numerous occasions when would it actually happen.

If this is the company I think it is they do some great coverage of the Scottish Fiesta Championship as one of my collegues at work runs in that track championship and they cover throughout the field as much as possible. they also cover the Legends racers including an Ex STRC Front runner in Ross Marshall so yes this would be great for Scottish rallying.

However the question has to be asked would it be event coverage or championship coverage??? there are a lot of crews who are not registered for the championship or different championships to the STRC who enter these events who maybe would not be impressed at paying this fee for coverage they are not to get any benefits from and I think this has to also be taken in to account before this step is taken.

If this coverage will be of the full event then great value for money and well worth it, however if it is not then I feel it some what unfair accross the board to charge for this priveledge for others. I can say this from 1st hand experience in the SRC where only the front runners get the coverage with the odd flash of the rest of the field. Yes it is great seeing the front runners but if this is to be used to push the sport forward again and get new blood in I think the best idea might be to show the grass roots lower budget competitors in an equal light.

However overall yes this is a great step forward for Scottish grass roots rallying if worked for all.

However the question has to be asked would it be event coverage or championship coverage???

As we have asked the question under the event banner, I would have thought it perfectly clear that it was the event that was being covered, obviously there will be championship registered competitors at the events but they will pay the same as the rest and therefor receive the same coverage.

ALL competitors would pay, ALL competitors would receive a copy of the TV programme and the unused footage.

I can say this from 1st hand experience in the SRC where only the front runners get the coverage with the odd flash of the rest of the field.

We as a championship pulled out of an event a few years back as they favoured Subaru's for their TV coverage and our guys were left out unless they done something that caught the eye of the cameraman.

The coverage that you speak of via the SRC, the front runners had more coverage because they paid an additional £50 + VAT each event to the TV company. Whilst I think they paid for the right to have more coverages, I do not believe that the rest should have had very little or in some cases, none at all.

Our interest as a club is for the competitors who support our events as well as the registered competitotrs of the championship on an equal basis, no more, no less.

I hope that answers your questions.

If everyone was prepared to pay the £15, it could start at the first event on March 13th. I will call entrants as they entries come in and see what they say.

Ange,

First of all Yes I know it states events in the topic title but there has been nothing to say this has been discussed accross the board or only at DCC events hence I was asking for some clarification.

Secondly the SRC coverage i refer to has been the passed 2 seasons where the coverage has been based around the top 10 and not on extra funds being paid (I know as this was looked into by the hire firm we were using in 2009) The passed 2 Season's STV coverage has been with a company who were not taking payments to gaurentee footage as had been done in previous seasons that would allow for anyone who put the funding in to get the coverage they required.

Thank you however for your response and yes I think it would be great to get coverage as I previously stated especially to promote the lower budget competitors in the smaller (cheaper to run) classes and to therefore push the developement of the sport forward.

Ange I am doing the RAF Rally Challenge (which will include the first Crail) and then Also the Honda Civic Challenge which will include the Kingdom stages also hoping to be out on the Lindisfarne and the Jim Clark. So yes I will be hoping to be out on a fair few events Although due to my other commitments and a Posting south in the offing I will not be competing on a Full STRC campaign in 2010 (However I am always available to sit in and help anyone out if there struggling for a Slimmer Ballast than I was last season!!!! If not then I will be either at my new post or back in Forres seeing my better half and helping her decorate the new house)

Wayne

Your car be ready for this season then???

To me aas a mere marshal this sounds like a good idea. Firstly it would increase the profile of the sport this side of the border which has to be good. Secondly, it gives crews looking for sponsorship a professioanl quality DVD to show potential sponsors. I accept the point made in another reply that it will be mainly be the front runners shown for the majority of the broadcast but the fact that everyone gets an unedited copy would help for my second point above. I don't feel I should vote as a non competitor (and hopefully soon a Scutineer) but feel it has to be a positive step.
I know things are a bit tight in the current climate but ask yourselves this - 'What is £15 as a percentage of everything you spend on an event?' I'm guessing the number is pretty low so seems like a no brainer to me.
